Bowling Green, Kentucky – With schools currently on summer break, Bowling Green is gearing up to welcome new athletic directors at its various educational institutions as they prepare for the upcoming academic year starting in August. Amidst these changes, both Warren Central High School and Greenwood High School have announced the appointment of new leaders committed to enhancing their athletic programs and fostering community involvement.

Warren Central High School Appoints Anja Shelton

Anja Shelton has been named the new athletic director for Warren Central High School and Moss Middle. Shelton, who previously held the position of assistant director of the campus recreation facility at Austin Peay, brings a wealth of experience and a culture-first approach to her new role. She aims to strengthen the Dragon identity by increasing student athlete participation and enhancing the visibility of the school’s athletic programs within the community.

Recognizing the importance of community involvement, Shelton emphasizes building pride beyond the school campus, with plans for increasing outreach initiatives. Her focus aligns with the belief that strong community ties are vital for the success of student athletes and the school’s overall athletic environment.

Greenwood High School Welcomes Alex Holder

In a parallel move, Alex Holder has been appointed as the new athletic director for both Greenwood High School and Drakes Creek Middle School. Holder brings over 11 years of coaching experience at various levels within the Greenwood basketball sphere, alongside his recent role as associate athletic director. While he acknowledges the solid foundation of athletics at Greenwood schools, Holder also sees opportunities for improvement and plans to foster a competitive spirit throughout the district.

Recognitions for Existing Leadership

Michele Wolf, the athletic director at Bowling Green High School, recently gained recognition as the Athletic Director of the Year by the Northwest Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrator Association. Since taking on the role in August 2021, Wolf has implemented significant changes within the athletics program, leading to an increase in the athletic budget from $150,000 to $225,000 due to enhanced sponsorships and fundraising efforts.

Under her administration, various community partnerships have emerged, further improving athletic facilities, including the installation of new scoreboards for baseball, softball, and football. Wolf also initiated the Bobcat Leadership Academy aimed at supporting and integrating athletes into the community.

In addition to these initiatives, Wolf has committed to presenting on important topics such as abuse prevention training for coaches and athletes at statewide conventions. Her active involvement in all athletic events and administrative responsibilities underscores her dedication to the support of student-athletes and coaches.

Financial Support for Athletics

The recent successful passage of a levy in Bowling Green City Schools has secured funding for athletics programs, which Wolf regards as essential for both the community and its youth’s development.

Looking ahead, Wolf has aspirations of transitioning to collegiate athletics or teaching sports management in higher education, indicating her commitment to continuing her involvement in sports beyond her current role.

New Developments in Athletic Administration

Bowling Green Schools have also appointed Stavros Paskaris as the assistant athletics director for development, who transitions from his role as an assistant hockey coach. Paskaris will oversee fundraising efforts, support the various sports programs, and maintain community relations to enhance the schools’ athletic initiatives. His previous coaching experience at prestigious institutions like Dartmouth and Princeton has equipped him with insights relevant to driving athletic success.

Challenges Ahead for College Athletics

On a larger scale, the recent approval of the House v. NCAA settlement will allow NCAA institutions to directly compensate college athletes starting in the 2025-26 academic year. However, MAC schools like Bowling Green may face unique challenges compared to their wealthier conference counterparts, further complicating the landscape of collegiate athletics.

As these changes take effect, the focus remains on creating a robust athletic environment that fosters student engagement and community pride in Bowling Green.
