After falling behind early, WKU showcased their resilience in the eighth inning, scoring five runs to secure the comeback win at Nick Denes Field. The game highlighted standout performances from both teams, setting the stage for an upcoming rematch. With their season continuing, the Hilltoppers will aim to build on this momentum in the next game.
In a thrilling game that had fans on the edge of their seats, the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers rallied in the late innings to claim a 9-5 victory over the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders on April 17, 2025, at Nick Denes Field in beautiful Bowling Green, Kentucky. This game was more than just another regular-season matchup; it was a dramatic showcase of determination and grit that had everyone buzzing.
From the start, it looked like Middle Tennessee was on track for success. They capitalized quickly when Eston Snider was hit by a pitch in the first inning, setting the stage for an impressive play. Shortly after, Brett Vondohlen brought the crowd to life with a thunderous two-run home run, marking his 15th home run of the season and giving the Blue Raiders an early advantage.
As the game progressed, Middle Tennessee continued to showcase their skills. Thanks to another run scored in the second inning due to a mistake by the Hilltoppers and a fielder’s choice by Snider, they extended their lead. The excitement was palpable, and fans couldn’t help but feel that the win was in the bag.
However, the Hilltoppers had other ideas! Despite falling behind, they showed incredible resilience. The game started to turn when Tyler Minnick contributed an RBI double in the fifth inning, allowing Middle Tennessee to regain a slight edge at 5-4. Yet, it was clear that the Hilltoppers were not done fighting. Snider’s RBI double in the sixth inning saw Middle Tennessee momentarily regain control with a 5-4 lead, but it would not last for long.
As the game entered the eighth inning, the drama reached a fever pitch. The Hilltoppers, who seemed to be battling the clock as much as their opponents, scored a staggering five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning! This explosive comeback turned the tables, pushing them ahead to a score of 9-5, leaving the Blue Raiders struggling to catch up!
It was clear evidence of the Hilltoppers’ fighting spirit, with every player stepping up to contribute to the team’s performance. WKU’s starter, Jack Bennett, had previously gone without allowing a home run this season until Vondohlen’s hit, making this victory all the more remarkable.
Middle Tennessee recorded a total of nine hits, showcasing their offensive talent. Snider, in particular, shone brightly, finishing the game with a remarkable 2-for-4 performance, which included a double, one RBI, and a stolen base. Other key contributors from Middle Tennessee included Hayden Miller and Brett Rogers, who joined the ranks of players with extra-base hits.
On the pitching side, Colin Kerrigan started for Middle Tennessee but allowed four runs over 4.2 innings while striking out four batters. Relief pitcher Will Jenkins unfortunately took the loss, allowing three runs over three innings, frustrating the team further as they searched for answers.
With Middle Tennessee’s record now standing at 17-21 and 3-10 in Conference USA play, they will have the chance to rebound quickly. They are set to continue the series with game two on April 18, 2025, at 3 p.m. at Nick Denes Field. Fans will undoubtedly be eager for a thrilling rematch as both teams battle for a crucial victory!
In the world of college baseball, every game is packed with emotions, intensity, and surprises. The late rally from WKU serves as a reminder that it’s not over until it’s over. Fingers crossed for an equally exciting showdown in the upcoming game!
