Bowling Green, KY – What a night for baseball fans in Bowling Green! The WKU Hilltoppers put on a dazzling display at Nick Denes Field on April 8, 2025, as they battled the University of Southern Indiana. Fans were treated to a stunning 13-9 victory that lit up the home field, marking a memorable moment in the season with a historic start!
It was the fourth inning that truly stole the spotlight. WKU’s offense broke through in a way we’ve rarely seen before, scoring an incredible 11 runs all in one inning! This fiery performance not only boasted the team’s highest scoring inning since 2010, but it also set a new standard for home season starts, making it WKU’s first time ever kicking off a season 22-0 at home.
Even though Southern Indiana tried to mount a late-game comeback, the Hilltoppers held firm, maintaining their lead and closing out the game in style. The victory rocketed WKU’s overall season record to 28-5. Not too shabby, right?
Looking ahead, WKU Baseball is set to take the show on the road! The team will head to Liberty for a three-game Conference USA series from April 11-13. As they prepare for this matchup, it’s clear that the Hilltoppers are ready to keep their momentum going. Currently, the team boasts a 6-3 conference record and a solid 6-5 mark on the road.
In their last Conference USA series, WKU showcased their strength by clinching two out of three games against then-ranked Dallas Baptist, outscoring them 16-8 over the weekend. This strong performance signifies that the Hilltoppers are not just riding a wave of victors but building a strong case for themselves in the conference.
One name that continues to shine is junior Ryan Wideman. Leading the team with an astonishing .452 batting average, he’s turning heads and rank third in all of Division I. Wideman is currently leading Conference USA with 14 doubles, 5 triples, and an impressive 27 stolen bases. Talk about a force to be reckoned with!
While the bats are booming, let’s not forget about the incredible pitching staff that makes WKU a tough competitor. They hold the best ERA in Division I at 2.67 and have tallied a remarkable 302 strikeouts this season. Jack Bennett, with his dazzling 1.50 ERA, will take the mound for game one against Liberty, followed by Dawson Hall, who boasts a jaw-dropping 0.82 ERA for game two, and Drew Whalen, holding a solid 2.23 ERA for the final game.
As for Liberty, they will not be a walk in the park. Entering the weekend with a 5-4 conference record and an overall 22-11 record, they recently showcased impressive skill by sweeping Middle Tennessee State, putting them on a roll. The first game against Liberty is scheduled for April 11 at 5 p.m. CT.
